One of Ingmar Bergman's (Smiles of a Summer Night, Secrets of Women) rare comedies, The Devil's Eye is the fanciful tale of Don Juan's return to Earth from Hell. Artfully blending theatrical and cinematic devices, Bergman sets the stage for mischief. We learn from the opening epigraph that " a virgin is a sty in the Devil's eye," then descend into the nether world where Satan is suffering due to one Swedish parson's daughter. The Devil sends Don Juan to seduce the chaste Britt-Marie (Bibi Andersson, Wild Strawberries) on the eve of her wedding and thus repair his eye. The renowned lover's servant Pablo joins in the game by chasing the parson's wife. Bergman explores some of his favorite "serious" themes--religion, love, and art--through a series of witty word battles that end in victory for the two virtuous women.
